Daring 78-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Third Bank Robbery: Admirable Courage or Shameful Crime?

Bonnie Gooch, a 78-year-old woman, has been apprehended and accused of theft for attempting to commit a bank robbery in Missouri for the third time. She was caught by the police while attempting to flee the scene, with banknotes strewn across the floorboard of her car.

Bonnie Gooch has a notorious history of Bank Robbery. She has two prior convictions for robbing banks, the first in 1977 and the second in 2020. Despite her previous convictions, Gooch attempted to rob a Missouri bank for the third time, which led to her recent arrest. Her repeated attempts suggest that Gooch has a propensity for criminal behavior and poses a threat to financial institutions. Gooch is currently being held on a US$25,000 bond after being charged with one count of stealing or attempting to steal from a financial institution.

On a Wednesday afternoon, Bonnie Gooch made her way to the Goppert Financial Bank in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, all the while disguised in plastic gloves, black sunglasses, and a face mask. Gooch approached the counter with a note in hand, which she passed on to the bank teller, demanding “13,000 small bills” according to court documents filed in Cass County. Despite the nature of her request, the note also contained an apology and gratitude, reading “Thank you sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Surveillance footage captured Gooch banging on the counter and asking the teller to hurry up, prosecutors said. She allegedly told the teller not to count the money and to “just give it to her.”

Bank Robbery

After being given the money, Gooch fled the scene in a Buick Enclave that still had its handicap registration number on display, according to the Kansas City Star. Local officers caught up with her about three kilometers down the road. When they did, they reported that she smelled strongly of alcohol and had cash strewn around the floor of her car.

Age is Just a Number: 78-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Third Bank Robbery

Pleasant Hill police Chief Tommy Wright called the situation “unusual” and stated that the department is looking to see if any underlying health factors may have contributed to Gooch’s third bank heist attempt. Wright added that the suspect had no diagnosed ailments.

It’s interesting to note that Gooch’s second conviction came after her son called the police to say that his mother was “off her rocker” and was planning to rob a bank. When officers arrived, they found a short, older woman wearing a wig and carrying a BB gun. Not long after, police located Gooch’s car and arrested her without incident.
